Giving Thanks and Giving Back

November 29, 2016

After Thanksgiving, the nation focuses on welcoming the holiday season and preparations begin on the 5-day stretch that includes Black Friday. That’s the day traditional retailers move out of ‘the red’ for the year, which is followed by Cyber Monday – the day online retailers see a huge jump in sales. Then comes the day when charities have their turn to inspire people to show the true meaning of the season. Today is #GivingTuesday – the international day of giving, a day when end-of-year donations bolster initiatives to improve the lives of others, strengthen communities and enrich the environment.

As the barrage of emails and social media reminders arrive, how does one choose what to support? Which 501c3 organizations are most deserving of donations? Let’s start in our own backyard with Friends of Reston (FOR).

A visit to our website,, reveals  the variety of  community projects that FOR supports.  This Giving Tuesday, our goal is to raise $10,000 to help the children of Reston to participate in the top notch youth programs run by Reston Association.  For every $450 raised, FOR can send one child on scholarship to two weeks of RA Camps. And for every $100 raised, FOR can provide a child with RA Tennis lessons. FOR is also working to outfit the new RA Fit Kids After-school Program and continues to support environmental education at the Walker Nature Center.

Donations are welcome in any amount and are tax deductible.   We hope you will be able to help Reston’s youth by making a contribution today. Just click the Donate Now button on the homepage.  Thank you for your generosity at this special time of year.
